Reduction of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) per TEU-Mile
CO2 is a cause of global warming. MOL is working to reduce CO2 emissions by improving vessel fuel efficiency through the use of Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCFs), antifouling ship bottom paints, wind resistance-reducing ship design, and ECO SAILING. MOL has established two separate CO2 emissions reduction targets, one for the midterm and one for each fiscal year.
MOL Target: Reduce CO2 emissions by 10% per unit load for FY2015 vs. FY2009 and to reduce by 1% per unit load each fiscal year.
MOL Result: Reduced CO2 emissions by 2.1% per unit load for FY2011 vs. FY2010.
Reduction of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)
NOx is generated when nitrogen contained in fuel oil and air binds with oxygen in the air at high temperatures when fuel burns in the engine. MOL is reducing emissions by controlling the combustion temperature in the engine and adopting electronically controlled engines. MOL has established two separate NOx emissions reduction targets, one for the midterm and one for each fiscal year.
MOL Target: Reduce NOx emissions per unit load by 10% for FY2015 vs. FY2009 and to reduce by 1% per unit load each fiscal year.
MOL Result: Reduced CO2 emissions by 2.1% per unit load for FY2011 vs. FY2010.
Reduction of Sulfur Oxide (SOx)
SOx is generated by burning fuel oil containing sulfur. MOL has set a standard for the sulfur content in the fuel it procures that is stricter than the international treaty governing sulfur content in fuel oil. MOL has established two separate SOx emissions reduction targets, one for the midterm and for each fiscal year.
MOL Target: Reduce SOx emissions by 10% per unit load for FY2015 vs. FY2009 and to reduce by 1% per unit load each fiscal year.
MOL Result: Unfortunately, SOx emissions increased by 2.6% per unit load for FY2011 vs. FY2010.
